I am sad to inform you that Ryszard S. Michalski passed away on Thursday

September, 20th.

As many of you know, Ryszard was an early pioneer in the field of machine

learning.  He developed a variety of machine learning algorithms starting

with his 1966 paper on machine learning for handwritten character

recognition.  Through the 1970's, 80's and 90's he championed symbolic

approaches to inductive inference including a series of algorithms based on

his variable-precision logic, as well as work on feature synthesis, or

"constructive induction."

Ryszard was instrumental in helping to launch machine learning as a coherent

field.  He co-founded both the ICML conference and the Machine Learning

journal, and co-edited an influential series of books on machine learning

through the 1980s.  In recent years Ryszard has been at George Mason

University as the PRC Chaired Professor of Computational Sciences and Health

Informatics.

Ryszard will be deeply missed.  Below is an email from his wife Elizabeth,

Dear Friends,

The memorial service for Ryszard S. Michalski will be on Friday, Spetember

28, at 1 p.m. at the St. Robert Bellarmine Chapel, 4515 Roberts Road,

Fairfax, VA.   The chapel is located at the intersection of Roberts Road and

Shenandoah River Lane on the east side of George Mason University. All are

invited to attend.  Ryszard's funeral will take place at the later date in

Krakow, Poland.

In lieu of flowers, donation may be made in Ryszard's memory to the

Kosciuszko Foundation, 15 East 65th St, New York, NY 10021.  For more
